Pungudutivu Maha Vidyalayam

History of the School

The Birth of the School
The present Pungudutivu Maha Vidyalayam is one of the schools established island-wide in 1946 by then minister of Education Hon. C.W.W.Kanangara, Hailed as the father of free education of Sri Lanka. This school was started as the government Junior English School on January 17th of 1946.

Founders of the School
The people who were in the fore front in establishing the school were then member of parliament for Kayts Sir Vythilingam Thuraisamy, Mr.V.Pasupathipillai (Chairman of Village Council), Mr.A.Saravanamuththu (Udaiyar), Mr.K,Yogupillai and Mr.Ampalavaner. As the need for starting the school immediately arose, it was begun on January 17th of 1946 in a section of Sri Ganesha Vidyalaya of Pungudutivu.

Permanent Location
Mr.K.Ambalavaner who longed to start the school in the centre of Pungudutivu donated the land he owned there to the school. In this land, a permanent building was constructed with the donation of money and materials given by the local wealthy people. Soon the school was shifted to the new building on March 3rd of 1948. The classes from grade 6 to grade 11were started. Mr.K.M.Thambaih worked as the principal at the beginning. He initiated the parent teachers association of the school on September 15th of 1948 and with the support of the parents developed the school.

History of the school
In 1953, the students of this institution appeared for the first time for the Senior School Certificate Examination. On April 4th of 1955 the school worked double session and uniform was introduced to the students. During this period, Pungudutivu Educational Development Society rendered many varied services for the educational progress of the school. It is indeed worthy to keep in memory the service the president of the Educational Development Society Mr.K.Mathiyaparanam and the secretary Mr.S.Y.Pooraja for the advancement of the education of Pungudutivu.
In the period 1966 and 1970 many achievements were made in the field of sports on district and island wide levels. In 1968, flower plants were planted in the school surroundings and the environment was made beautiful. In 1971 a well was dug in the ground of Sri Subramaniyam Girls School, to find permanent solution to the water problem of Pungudutivu Maha Vidyalaya. Water was provided from Sri Subramaniyam Girls School to Maha Vidyalaya through a pipe line. The benefactor of this great service was the popular businessman Mr.N.K.Myilvaganam.
In 1972, G.C.E.A/L Science and Commerce sections were started and the school was raised to 1 AB level. In order to solve the lack of accommodation in the school a two–storey building was opened up and the silver jubilee was celebrated. The silver Jubilee magazine was also issued.
Due to the great displacement that took place on January 17th of 1991, 95% of the inhabitants of Pungudutivu got displaced to Jaffna Town. Therefore all the fifteen schools of Pungudutivu had to be started in the Jaffna Town. At this juncture, all the schools of Pungudutivu were amalgamated into one school and functioned for brief periods, first at J/Sanmarka Maha Vidyalayam and next at J/Periyapulam Maha Vidyalayam subsequently it was moved to J/Hindu Ladies College as the afternoon session school. Afterwards the school functioned in the morning session at J/Kantharmadam Universal Private Educational Centre for a short period. From March 1st of 1994, this school functioned independently at 81, Brown Road in temporary sheds put up with the government assistance. The support extended by the old students Associatons, Parent–teachers Associatons of this school and the Multi–Purpose Co-operative Society of Pungudutivu and Nainativu has to be cherished for ever in our memory.
Again due to the displacement of people that happened on October 30th of 1995 the school was moved to the Thenmaradchi and functioned for a short duration at Chavakachcheri Kachchai Government Tamil Mixed Vidyalaya in the afternoon session. Again on June 17th of 1996 it moved to its original location and resumed its educational service. Today in this school classes from grades 1 to 13 are being conducted.
Mr.K.M.Thambiah, Mr.S.Vilvaratnam, Mr.V.Somasundaram, Mr.S.Rajanayagam, Mr.Sachithanandam, Mr.K.V.Sellathurai, Mr.M.Ramalingam, Mr.K.Mayilvaganam, Pandit V.V.Nallathamby, Mr.K.Sellathurai, Mr.A.C.Nalliah, Mr.K.Perampalam, Mr.N.Tharmapalan and Mr.K.Tharmakunasingam were the past principal of this school. Their educational services can be never forgotten by us. Since May 1st of 2009 Mr.S.Ganeswaran has been carrying on his duty as principal of this school.

Our Primary School
On October 17th of 1991 the whole islands (the entire Theevaham) were brought under the control of the Sri Lankan government. Later the grade 1 to grade 11 students who were not displaced in Mandaitivu, Velanai and Pungudutivu were gathered together and grouped into one. Then arrangement was made by the government to educate all of them at Pungudutivu Maha Vidyalaya. Ninety students who remained in the three islands were gathered together and provided education with hostel facilities. The teachers and the retired teachers who were not displaced are employed for carrying out the instruction.
When the displaced students and teachers returned to the school on June 17th of 1996, the other island students who were studying here, went back to their own school. However, the primary school that was inaugurated temporarily is being continued even now in consideration of the needs of the primary school students of pungudutivu.
